Barco

December 2008 by Michael Karagosian

Barco is an OEM supplier of DLP Cinema 2K projectors. It is a relative newcomer to the cinema industry, but has built up its cinema reputation in recent years, scoring a majority of projector sales commitments from DCIP. In this, Barco scored 60% of Regal and 100% of Cinemark, for a total projector commitment of 7500 units.

Financially, however, the company has been challenged. Its share price dropped 33% following Oct 1, and over the past two years its shares lost 70% of value, reducing its market cap to $340M. Unconfirmed reports say that the company, in anticipation of DCIP sales, built up inventory, which it now has to sit on.
