SMPTE

March 2009 by Michael Karagosian

A short footnote in this report, but a hugely significant achievement, was SMPTE’s publication of the final packaging standard in March, completing the suite of packaging standards for digital cinema. This effort began in late 2001 with a group pulled together by your author, most of whom had been working on incompatible packaging concepts within their companies. The group agreed on a direction the standard should follow during the first meeting, and the majority of the concept held up with time. Notably, John Hurst was a member of that small group, at the time with Avica, and today co-owner of Cinecert. John played a significant role in the development of packaging standards, and developed the shared packaging software libraries used by manufacturers in their products.
