With a heading like that, it would seem there’s not much else to say. But there’s always a story to tell. Harold Hallikainen (USL) and Sripal Mehta (Dolby) were the collaborators and authors of the CSP/RPL protocol, developed to support the display of closed caption text in the DCP by enabling the interoperability of digital projection systems with third party closed caption systems. CSP/RPL synchronizes and delivers closed caption content between media blocks and in-theater personal display systems. The protocol suite is defined by SMPTE standards ST430-10 Digital Cinema Operations: Auxiliary Content Synchronization Protocol (CSP), and ST430-11 Digital Cinema Operations: Auxiliary Resource Presentation List (RPL), authored by Harold and Sripal. Not widely known is the fact that these standards are the only ones not specified or tested by DCI, and yet available in every digital cinema around the world. There are many people that deserve thanks for making that happen. But it would never have happened without the collaborative effort of Sripal and Harold. Congratulations, guys, for your well-deserved award!
