Screen Growth. End of June, the number of digital cinema screens in the US reached the 10,000 mark, while the worldwide count reached 22,000. For the US, nearly half of screens are 3-D capable. The worldwide 3-D count is a little over 60% of digital screens.

The Australian government announced in July its Cinema Access Implementation Plan. The plan calls for audio description and caption access in at least one screen of every major cinema site by 2014.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) released in July a new Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM), consisting of four documents. One document details its intent to require accessible web sites, a stunning move that so far has eluded the blogs. Another of the documents details its thinking concerning requirements for cinema. Among its many questions is a request for details on available digital cinema standards.

Belgian-based XDC signed 574 screens for deployment in Germany through deals with Kinepolis and Cineplex Deutschland.

In June, Arts Alliance Media signed a deployment deal for 790 screens with UK-based Cineworld Group PLC.
