- The surprises at CES were subtle this year. The count of 153,000 people was up only 3% from 2010, but there was a vibrant feeling to the show. The main show floor had a new layout, requiring new booths from vendors. But new booths reveal budgets: Dolby’s was dazzling, while Sony’s looked like it was lifted from a closed Blockbuster store. Screens having 4K and 8K resolutions were on display by several manufacturers. While no consumer can see the difference, it was clear that the marketing game for resolution in the home has begun. In a bold move, LG’s entire booth consisted of 3-D displays, showcasing large, beautiful, high contrast OLED screens. But the gem of the show was tucked away in the MasterImage booth, where the company’s hand-held auto stereoscopic 3-D LCD displays were demonstrated. No lenticular nonsense, no multi view content required, these screens looked natural, with the 3-D effect dropping off gracefully as the angle of view increased. More heartburn for RealD investors.
